CHAPTER SIX

SHELBY woke from her nap feeling much improved. Bathing again, she dressed and styled her hair. With a surprise she realized that it had been nice to get some rest without worrying about the clinic. For at least today the concerns of the clinic had been Taylor’s and that was a freeing feeling. She could too easily get used to not carrying all the burdens in her life.

Now she sat at her desk, with Buster asleep on a towel beside her. She’d love to spend more afternoons this way. Pushing a button on her computer, she brought up the pictures she’d taken the day before. She clicked on each individual photo in the rows of small squares. With one tap a photograph of Taylor standing causally in front of the shack filled the screen.

Even his picture made her blood hum. He was a handsome man with high cheekbones and a strong jaw. That she was well aware of already. His well cared-for appearance contrasting against the dilapidated building made him the focal point of the photo. He captivated her by simply looking into the camera.

Thoughts of his kisses made her heart break the speed limit. She shouldn’t let that happen again. It would be too easy to let him into her heart. But what then?

She clicked through each picture. It wasn’t until the picture where he’d looked directly at her that the veneer slipped. There his vulnerability became visible. No doubt he’d not meant for that particular part of his personality to show. Aware of his need, she longed to soothe him.

“Hey, what’re you doing?” Taylor interrupted her thoughts.

Shelby squealed, her hand going to her chest. “For heaven’s sake, Taylor, are you trying to scare me to death?”

“I thought for sure you would’ve heard the door slam.”

Buster made a whimpering sound and Taylor picked him up.

“So, I see you’re feeling better. What are you up to?”

“Just looking over the pictures I took yesterday.”

“Mind if I see?”

He pulled a chair up before she could respond. “Scoot over.”

Now he was entirely too close for her comfort. She went back and began clicking through the photos. The house and surrounding landscape had turned out perfectly. Taylor made noises of appreciation and interest in his throat. A soft, warm feeling washed over her at each of his responses.

She leaned back in the chair and put her hands in her lap.

“What about those?” he pointed to the last row of pictures.

“They’re just more of the house.”

“I’d like to see them also.”

With a resigned sigh she put the cursor over the first picture. His face popped into focus.

He moved nearer and gently pushed her hand off the mouse and continued clicking. “Why didn’t you want me to see these?”

“I don’t know. I thought they might make you feel uncomfortable.”

“Why? You’re an excellent photographer. Didn’t you think I would like them?”

She shifted in the chair because of both his earnest question and him being so near. “I wasn’t sure.” Did he not see what she did?

Taylor stopped on the one where he’d been watching her, really watching.
